Attempt More Questions or Focus on Accuracy? The Truth for Indian Exams

Negative marking changes the math. Here is how toppers decide between attempts and accuracy in JEE, NEET, UPSC, CAT and SSC.

Attempt More Questions or Focus on Accuracy?

In any exam with negative marking, accuracy is not a virtue — it is arithmetic. Most aspirants lose more marks to silly mistakes than to unsolved questions.

The math nobody shows you

Take JEE Main: +4 for correct, −1 for wrong.

  • Attempt 70 questions, 50 correct → 200 − 20 = 180
  • Attempt 60 questions, 55 correct → 220 − 5 = 215

The second student attempted fewer questions and scored 35 marks more. That is one to three ranks worth of difference at the top.

Accuracy benchmarks by exam

ExamHealthy accuracy on attempted questions
JEE Main / Advanced85%+
NEET90%+
UPSC Prelims75–80%
CAT85%+
SSC CGL / Banking90%+

If your accuracy is below these benchmarks, attempting more questions makes your score worse, not better.

A simple decision rule inside the exam hall

For each question, in 10–15 seconds:

  1. Recognise — Have I seen this exact concept before?
  2. Estimate — Can I solve it within 1.5× the average per-question time?
  3. Commit or skip — If both are yes, attempt. If either is no, skip without guilt.

Smart skipping is a skill. Practise it in every mock, not just the real exam.

How to build accuracy in practice

  • Turn negative marking ON in every mock and sectional test, from day one.
  • Maintain an error log — silly errors vs conceptual gaps vs unknown topics.
  • Re-do every wrong question without time pressure, then re-attempt it under timer one week later.
  • Cap your attempts. If your accuracy is 70%, force yourself to attempt only 70% of the paper for two weeks. Accuracy will jump first, then attempts.
