In a major move to fortify India’s national security in the digital era, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has officially announced the launch of a groundbreaking undergraduate program: Bachelor of Cybersecurity (B.Cyber.).

Set to welcome its inaugural batch in July 2026, the unique four-year degree bypasses the traditional JEE Advanced pathway, opting instead for a highly specialized, merit-and-grit selection process designed to scout India’s brightest cyber talent.

A Radical Shift in IIT Admissions

Breaking away from standard IIT admission protocols, the B.Cyber. program will not use JEE Advanced ranks for final selection. Instead, candidates will undergo a multi-stage screening process:

  1. Initial Screening: Based on JEE Main scores and verifiable evidence of prior work or achievements in the field of cybersecurity.

  2. On-Campus Assessment: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the IIT Kanpur campus for a rigorous in-person evaluation, culminating in a competitive hackathon.

The program will be housed under the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems at IITK.

Inside the Curriculum: 2 Years of Theory, 2 Years of Action

The structure of the B.Cyber. degree is deliberately split into two distinct halves to balance foundational theory with high-stakes, real-world application:

  • Years 1 & 2 (Academic Foundation): Students will spend their first two years on the IIT Kanpur campus, undergoing intensive coursework and controlled laboratory training to build rock-solid theoretical and practical foundations.

  • Years 3 & 4 (Government Internship Phase): In a first-of-its-kind arrangement, students will spend their final two years embedded within various government security organizations. There, they will work directly on real-world cybersecurity challenges and national digital infrastructure defense.

Defending the Digital Frontier

The launch comes at a time when cybersecurity has transformed from a corporate IT concern into a critical pillar of national defense.

"Future conflicts will be fought as much in cyberspace as in the physical world," said Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur. "Critical national infrastructure will require strong protection against cyberattacks. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a cadre of highly trained experts capable of safeguarding national digital systems."

Prof. Nitin Saxena, Dean of the Wadhwani School of AI and Intelligent Systems, echoed this sentiment, noting that the program is meticulously designed to meet a rapidly growing global demand while addressing vital national priorities.

Next Steps for Aspirants

Detailed application guidelines and the official registration portal are expected to go live next week on a dedicated IIT Kanpur webpage.

With its aggressive focus on practical hacking, government collaboration, and unconventional entry requirements, the B.Cyber. program is poised to become one of the most competitive and prestigious tech tracks in the country.
