Eligibility Criteria

Before beginning your preparation, it is crucial to ensure you meet the NTA’s specific eligibility requirements.

Educational Qualification

  • General/Unreserved Category: Candidates must have secured at least 55% marks in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC.
  • Reserved Categories (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Third Gender): A relaxation of 5% is provided, requiring at least 50% marks in the Master’s degree.
  • Final Year Students: Candidates who are appearing for their qualifying Master’s degree final year examination or those whose result is still awaited are also eligible to apply.

Age Limit and Relaxations

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): The upper age limit is 30 years. However, a relaxation of up to 5 years is provided to candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender categories, as well as to women applicants.
  • Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for the post of Assistant Professor.

Exam Pattern and Structure

The UGC NET June 2026 will follow a Computer Based Test (CBT) format. The paper is traditionally divided into two segments, taken in a single session without a break:

  1. Paper I (General Paper): This paper is common for all candidates and focuses on Teaching/Research Aptitude. It assesses reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.
  2. Paper II (Subject Specific): This paper is based on the subject selected by the candidate. It tests deep domain knowledge and core concepts of the chosen post-graduation subject.

Both papers consist of objective-type, Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). There is currently no negative marking, which allows candidates to attempt all questions.

Preparation Strategy for Success

Successfully clearing the UGC NET requires a balance of conceptual clarity and speed.

  • Master the Syllabus: Download the official syllabus for your subject and Paper I. Identify high-weightage topics and prioritize them.
  • Focus on Paper I: Often, candidates over-focus on their core subject and neglect Paper I. Since Paper I is common and scoring, it can be the deciding factor for achieving JRF.
  • Solve Previous Year Papers: Analyzing past papers helps you understand the evolving difficulty level and the type of questions asked by the NTA.
  • Regular Mock Tests: Simulations are key. Taking mock tests under exam-like conditions improves time management and reduces exam-day anxiety.

To ensure a holistic preparation, aspirants often look at various teaching exams to strengthen their pedagogy and subject knowledge. You can enhance your practice using the UGC NET Paper 1 + Paper 2 series.
