- Indian Naval Academy (INA): A degree in Engineering from a recognized university/institution.
- Air Force Academy (AFA): A degree from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or a Bachelor of Engineering.

UPSC CDS Exam Pattern
The CDS exam consists of a written examination followed by an Intelligence and Personality Test by the Service Selection Board (SSB).
- For IMA, INA, and AFA: The written exam includes three papers: English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. Each paper is of 2 hours duration and carries 100 marks.
- For OTA: Candidates appear for only two papers: English and General Knowledge. Each is of 2 hours duration and carries 100 marks.
The questions are of Objective Type (MCQs). There is a penalty for wrong answers, making accuracy as crucial as speed.
Preparation Strategy for CDS (II) 2026
Success in the CDS exam requires a balanced approach between academic knowledge and physical conditioning.
- Master the Basics: For the English paper, focus on grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. For Mathematics, ensure your 10th-standard concepts are ironclad.
- Stay Updated: General Knowledge covers everything from History and Geography to Current Affairs. Reading a daily national newspaper is non-negotiable.
- Consistency with Mock Tests: Solving previous years' papers and taking mock tests is the most effective way to understand the exam's temperament.
- SSB Orientation: Remember that the written exam is only half the battle. Start working on your communication skills, physical stamina, and general awareness early on to excel in the SSB interview.
